Florida Snowbirds want to know about Hurricanes
By David A. Podgursky • Sep 5th, 2008 • Category: Featured ArticlesFrom the look of so many houses in Boynton Beach and Lake Worth Florida, Snowbirds and Foreign National homeowners have already called in their handymen to shutter up their winter homes in South Florida prior to arriving.
Yes… it is Hurricane Season here in South Florida and the Atlantic is proving to be very busy so far.
With Hurricane Ike currently churning in the Atlantic Ocean as a Category 3, people who want to buy or have active contracts on their properties are worried about the storm and where it will hit.
My suggestion is to check out the Storm Pulse website. It has all sorts of great information and allows you to:
- track the location of the hurricane
- see the cone of error
- see where it is heading next
- see where it is being forecast to make landfall
and understand when the pressure drops 5mb and the speed slows over warm water that it will probably gain intensity
Right now it does not look like Palm Beach County is going to have a direct hit. Ike is headed due West and looks like it will either hit South Beach or pass through the Strait of Florida (between Cuba and Florida).
For those who are interested in watching the storm path, here is a screenshot of Storm Pulse so you can see Hurricane Ike as it was reported this morning.

SHOULD YOU WORRY ABOUT HURRICANES IF YOU’RE WANTING TO BUY A HOME IN FLORIDA??
eh… once you get down here, you feel less stress about them and some people even welcome them. They can actually be fun with all the Hurricane Parties and "roughing it" in your house.
Here is the WPTV Hurricane Preparedness website - it has some great information on how to get a house ready, get a generator and where to buy your gas.
MY COMMENTARY
I doubt that Hurricane Ike will have any major impact on the Palm Beach County Real Estate Market. It will get gusty (haha) here but things are looking up as it is and one storm of consequence since 2005 is pretty telling of how often they can really have some impact. Sure, the 4 in 12 months of 2004-2005 and Katrina are still on our minds but the traffic lights are back up, the roofs are rebuilt and honestly I’ve never even seen a FEMA trailer…and I doubt that will change this year.
